INTERVIEWING

Community Focus facilities were used to the full on the last evening of the year (July 6th) as Peter Kidman and Trevor Williams gave an illustrated demonstration on how to set up for an interview. Both the audio and video aspects were covered. Combining a classic three light setup with two cameras and a mixer enabled members to see some of the difficulties in getting just the right balance of light to make both interviewer and interviewer look good.

You can see it at http://www.itvlocal.com/london/londonlife/index.html - go to the Barnet link; sharp eyed members will spot FCS member Trevor Williams and his wife Ann getting in on the act. Joe kindly put FCS up on the site as the originators.
Hal Jeayes came third in the recent Annual Competition with his 'drama with a twist' called Time to Kill. We asked Hal to describe some of the problems of film-making with a very small crew. He kindly wrote SO YOU WANT TO MAKE A MOVIE? for us. Read it here.

DRAMA AT THE TRIANGLE

Tuesday 18th April we provided all three judges for the Semi-final of the Triangle, Fritz Cohen, Peter Kidman and Mike Slowe plus Shayan Bilgi assembled at St. Albans to sit in judgment over Hemel, Luton and St. Albans slugging it out to go on to the final. It was a very mixed bunch of videos varying from the highest quality in the Documentary section to what was generally agreed to be a rather lower level in the set theme area. Thank goodness it has been scrapped seemed to be our judges general view.

The drama came in the set theme round when both Mike and Peter independently concluded that the St. Albans entry, which was probabaly the best of the the three, was not on the subject and thus would lose points. There were hurried consultations, muttered explanations and some logic twisting but the decision was kept. Our two dissenting judges looked somewhat worried as the scores came through and as they wondered whether this decision would actually change the result with potentially difficult consequences.

In the end Hemel won and Mr Triangle (Ron Jones) assured us that even if we had judged the St. Albans entry to be on the subject of Wrong Number it would not have changed the result. So now you know - being a Judge is no picnic but they let us live - at least this time...

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

ANOTHER CLEAN JOKE

A man walks into a fish and chip shop with a fish under his arm:
"Do you have any fishcakes?" he asks the woman frying fish.
"Yes, of course." the woman says.
"Great." says the man, nodding at the fish under his arm. "It's his birthday."

LOCAL FINCHLEY NEWS

Local cinema the Phoenix in East Finchley has installed a new HD projector. Club member Ian Morris reports:
" I have just returned from a screening of 'The Lives of Others', best foreign film in the Oscars, it was shot on 35mm Kodak stock, and projected on the Phoenix's new HD projector in full 'scope (2.35:1) and Dolby Digital (got this detail from manager after the show) The quality of image, brightness, and of course steadiness without annoying dust from a 35mm print was fantastic. And the subtitles were equally pin sharp. This new means of projection is fantastic for cinemas like this that show a lot of 'indie' and foreign films' - no more 35mm prints needed costing perhaps several thousand pounds, just a download from a hard disc and bums on seats!
According to an article in the Muswell Hill Times the UK Film Council supplied £11.7 mill to 209 cinemas - that's £56,000 each -  which is not actually that much when you consider that our first club projector cost nearly £3,000 ten years ago.

New Speakers
Ever since we came to the Quaker Meeting House we have had the use of a couple of Speakers loaned to us by Joe Spalter. However these speakers (Tannoy I believe) are now showing their age and the sound is no longer up to the job of filling the QMH. So we have now purchased some new speakers - Monitor Audio Bronze BR5. These come highly rated by the magazines and by the suppliers Hi-fi specialists Harrow Audio.

We described the requirement (ie largish hall audience 15 to 30 people) to Harrow Audio who promised to take them back if they do not meet our needs. We tested them out and decided to keep them- so Joe can have his speakers back

Steadicam

On Friday April 27th Bob High demonstated the Merlin Steadicam; all who saw this were impressed with how neat and effective it was - but maybe tricky to master. If you missed this or just want to know more see this link.

The professional show for higher end video equipment is called NABs and is held in Las Vegas in April each year. The hottest news from the latest NABs is from Sony. Basically they are going to introduce a tapeless series of HD cameras and the cheapest, being introduced in late 2007, will be under £4000. The spec is just amazing and details are here and here.

I spotted very useful looking piece of kit: the ElipZ 10k battery from Anton Bauer.

On March 23rd Peter Kidman and Bob High gave the latest camcorder technology update. These are the links to some of the various sources used.

A VIDEO POEM

We three pixels of Orient are;
Trapping light that comes from afar,
Tilting and Panning, focusing, zooming,
Following yonder star.

Refrain

O camera of wonder, collecting light,
Camera of metal and plastic bright
Image recording and prize winning
Just be sure the editing's right
